Great Car Buying Experience

I recently purchased a car from Shift and I was very happy with the experience. I was able to find the car that I wanted at a better price than the dealerships. Before I found Shift I had multiple experiences of finding a car I liked at a dealership, only to have it sell before I had a chance to test drive it. With Shift I was able to reserve the car as soon as I found it for only $200. When my car arrived, it was really clean and looked like new even though it’s a 2015. I took it to a dealership to have it inspected (even though Shift already did an inspection) and was told it was in perfect condition. I was also able to finance the car through my credit union! The salesperson I worked with, Kyle, was really friendly and down to earth. I would recommend Shift when you’re ready to buy a car.

Worst Experience Buying A Vehicle

If you are an out of state buyer, DO NOT buy through Shift. I bought a $30k+ vehicle through them. Here’s my story: I live in Idaho, so they had to ship the vehicle to me. When I was guaranteed 7-10 day delivery, the delivery came in 13 days. You have to constantly call THEM just to get a status update on your vehicle. Wednesday, I received the vehicle. I haven’t driven the vehicle more than 20 miles since I have had it. The following day after I got the vehicle I brought it into a local mechanic to inspect it, since I only have 7 days to really decide if I like the car or not. I have only had this car in my driveway for about 12 hours. And haven’t seen it since. Come to find out the drain plug was seeping engine oil, and they found that the thread to the oil pan was damaged and needed to be replaced. Apparently, a little oil leaking is “Shift Certified.” Was told it wasn’t a big deal. Shift was notified of this on Thursday of last week. It’s now Tuesday of the following week, and Shift tells me that I need to wait 24-48 hours for them to call the mechanic. JUST TO CALL THE MECHANIC. I even offered to do a 3-way call. I was told they can’t do that. This is insane. It’s been 4 business days and they still haven't called. The total cost of labor and parts for the oil pan is a little over 1k. But they did rent me a car, that will cost THEM $1800. How can you possibly explain this logic? Things you should know when you are about to buy through Shift. 1. Giving them money is an easy process, but doing business with them, you will pay the price. 2. You never talk to the same person 3. They will never call you back 4. Taking your money is priority, not providing quality service 5. Be prepared to stay on the phone for hours. And on top of this, I hear car registration for an out of state vehicle will take months. More headaches to come my way. “Skip the headaches of used car buying” Shift says. This has been a nightmare, a time sucker, and more than a headache. It's been the worst buying experience I have ever had. My recommendation for an out of state buyer. Look elsewhere.

I bought a 2019 Lexus ES from Shift and was very happy about it. I live in San Diego and there is a Shift office in town, so I don't have to go through the trouble of delivery, etc. I first scheduled an appointment to test drive the car on my driveway. A concierge brought the car to me in a couple of hours. I didn't make the purchase right away but after checking out a few other dealers, no one can beat Shift's price during this special period of the price surge. I then bought the car through the app and another concierge brought the car to me again on the same day. The paperwork is very simple and the car is in great condition. I paid in full so I didn't have any experience with financing and that sort of stuffs.

Late, Lack of Communication, and Lots of Repairs

The concierge was late for the delivery appointment because Shift was overbooked. There was a broken part of the car that Shift said would fix before delivering my car to me, but they never fixed it. The registration, license plates, and title haven't arrived and it's nearing 90 days. I had to go see a mechanic to replace the tires, battery, and struts and for an oil change after a couple months of owning my car.

Should have gone with a local dealership

Took two appointments for them to show up with the car. Car is leaking oil despite their "inspection" and specific assurance of no leaks. In total has $3500 of repairs needed to parts supposedly covered by the passed inspection. Returning the car after 7 days is proving challenging, as they don't answer the phone and say email has a 24 hour response time. If the car had been what they said it was, this would have been 4 stars, but it appears that their assurances of quality are no better than any other dealer, and returning the car, if we manage it, will more then outweigh any convenience we started with.

Amaturer hour at this place. They want to compete with the likes of Carmax but they just don't have the talent, infrastructure or desire from management to be anything but just another used car dealer. See the Kurt Russell Movie from the 70's USED CARS for an example of their business model. I literally handed 2 different checks to these incompetent people for a car and were rejected both times for reasons that lead me to think that someone on the inside wanted the car and needed to save up a bit more to get it, so don't sell it kinda thing. Or just sheer outright and gross incompetence, either way I would advise in the strongest manner humanly possible to avoid these folks at all costs. I sincerely doubt they will be around long term.

Best car buying experience I've ever had, testing driving from home made my decision easier and felt like I could do the transaction in my own time with no pressure. Very happy with my purchase and will be buying from Shift again, and recommend to anyone!

Shift made buying a car so easy. There was NO pressure to buy or upsell. It was super convenient having the car come to us for a test drive and the staff was super nice and knowledgeable.

Interesting and easy experience once the test drive was completed. However, it took them over an hour to find my vehicle I scheduled to test drive, so we just stood around waiting while they attempted to find the car. Minor annoyance, but not a total deal breaker. Close though
