I purchased a car in San Diego and got into it thinking

2.0
by aq9776 on Oct 04, 2022

I purchased a car in San Diego and got into it thinking that I didn't need to examine anything with a fine tooth comb. I was confident that their 150-point inspection would suffice. I was wrong. I was wondering why the gentleman that was doing the paperwork was taking so long outside on the car. I got into the car and started making my way home for an appointment. Once I got on the freeway, the driver's mirror was rattling. I called the customer service line immediately and while doing that I looked at the dash to find (!) an air pressure sensor. I immediately took it in but first had to sit on hold for an hour before getting a rep from the company. Beware that you will have to be on hold for quite some time because customer service doesn't seem to be at the top of the company's priorities. I think this will be the downfall of this company. I turned the car in to the mechanic and the instructions were that I had to wait till Shift reviewed the work request (normally a 48-hour waiting period) I didn't have that time so I took an Uber to pick the car up again on Friday afternoon. I had to pay $100 for them to release the car to me for the diagnostic fee (another unplanned expense out of my pocket. The mechanics didn't put the mirror on correctly and the mirror fell off. It is Monday and after waiting on hold for about 2 1/2 hours, I get ahold of someone. I had already sent the diagnostic to Shift and they still have to send it to their team to review. Coming up on Tuesday and really questioning why Shift's ad says "lemon free zone" 150-point inspection. What is the freakin point if they have people releasing cars to customers that have issues? I will never do business with this company and will not recommend them to anyone. Fail!!

I ordered a plug-in hybrid from Shift and the pictures

I ordered a plug-in hybrid from Shift and the pictures included a charging cord. When I picked up the vehicle there was no cord. They said they would order one and send it to me. 45 days, several emails and three hours of waiting on hold completed, I still do not have the cord.

High fees with little to no service

by Koko on Sep 04, 2022

Their deals seem pretty good when compared to Carvana and CarMax until you realize they tag on an additional 1250 "concierge fee", which is pretty audacious considering they have eliminated test drives entirely. Then you have the shipping fee (and if you don't like the car once you see it, you're out whatever shipping fee you paid). Then a $200 fee if you don't finance through them and their lending partners. It's a bogus fee that I rarely see elsewhere. I guess that's to make up for the money they lose from not being able to markup your interest rate a few points, as they did mine. Fortunately, I happened to have a longstanding relationship with one of the recommended banks and was able to find out what my rate would have been if I were able to borrow from them without a markup. According to them, they are eliminating almost every aspect of face to face interaction at this point and shutting down their operations in some locations (including Austin, TX). They did not however mention anything about eliminating the "concierge fee" even though they are now the exact opposite of having any concierge type service. Finally, even if you live 1 mile away, you are going to pay a delivery fee ($150) but you can get a $150 "savings" by going to the local parking lot to pick it up yourself. They are really just a tech company that happens to have a lot of cars around to sell on their software platform. Given economic factors, I would not be surprised if they were to stop selling vehicles (directly) at all and just license their platform out to other dealers. I'd recommend going through a credit union for financing and once you have that set up, just go to a regular dealer ship where you can test drive any car you want without getting shafted if you end up not liking it.

Car was not available to view or test drive in person.

Car was not available to view or test drive in person. They wanted me to purchase the car first and then return it if I didn’t like it. That just made me uncomfortable.

I've been looking at this car and even messaged in.

I've been looking at this car and even messaged in. Not once did I get a return text, call, or email despite agreeing to an initial text from Shift. I let it simmer for a couple of days, filled out a form on their own website, and nothing. Finally checked back the following week, and the VW R32 I had sent a number of inquiries on was listed as sale pending. Looks like Shift hasn't changed since they've gone public.

Worst buying experience ever

1.0
by Alexander on Jul 26, 2022

I had an appointment to test the car. First, I needed to wait 20 minutes for a salesman to come even though I had an appointment. I was told they didn't know where the keys of the car were. How you are running a business like this? !!! After extra 40 minutes waiting (already 1 hour) they keys appeared, they said the car was being washed, but they washed the car in the facilities, so how they couldn't know where the keys of the car car were? !!! Anyway, I made a separate appointment to buy the car and again the same "excuse", namely they didn't know where the keys were. For a second time also with appointment. After waiting for 90 minutes, they couldn't find the keys. So, I lost more than 3 hours (time going there and getting home) for nothing. If you want to have the worst buying experience event, go to Shift

ABSOLUTE WORSE DEALERSHIP EVER

1.0
by Angry customer on Jul 25, 2022

This is beyond the worst dealership you can shop at for a car. Their management are complete idiots. The way they manage deliveries and purchases are the most exhausting and unorganized experience i've ever had to endure. I spent two weeks waiting for a car to be delivered just to be canceled on my delivery day due to a faulty A/C unit that should have been caught during the pre-delivery inspection. On top of that, they're not offering any sort of ETA on the car's repair nor a compensation or credit for the time i wasted organizing my life around the delivery. Do not shop here, the prices are jacked up, the cars are banged up, the management is horrible and you'll get the run arounds until you give up, they're worse than a dealership with 20 salesmen running to you, because at least then, youll get an answer. They don't even have a direct line, i talked to so many different "managers" and "sales reps" and "advisors" to be told different information that led me to be misinformed and scammed of "nonrefundable" deposits. Do NOT waste your time at the Oakland Shift. The Sacramento one might be better, but I'd just avoid all Shift in general.

Returned a car I bought at the Sacramento store because

3.0
by Glenn on Jul 20, 2022

Returned a car I bought at the Sacramento store because my mechanic said it was a rust bucket. Not sure how it passed their rigorous 150 point inspection. Maybe they need 151 points. To their credit, the return was easy and hassle free. Not in their favor was an inability to find 2 of the 3 cars I had reserved online for a test drive. They had the keys for one but couldn’t find the car. For the other, they found the car but couldn’t find the keys. The one I test drove, broke down after stopping to give the car a good look over. It took over an hour to bring me another car to get back to the dealership. Determined to find a car despite their ineptitude, I selected another for a test drive and surprise surprise, they couldn’t find it. The guy couldn’t have been nicer but overall. a colossal waste of 2 days at their dealerships and one day searching their poorly constructed website. I’d say it’s probably worth passing up their good pricing and going to Carmax, where at least they know where their cars are and are able to find the keys. Great concept, sucky execution.
